MIBAG AG has been in business for more than 50 years. MIBAG AG is known for its mobile energy supply systems, from retractors and busbar systems to cable trolley installations.
Since 2017, MIBAG AG has been active in the field of electromobility. During this time, we have had the privilege of realising a wide range of exciting projects – from spring balancers for charging stations (standalone solutions) and cable-based retraction systems, both motor- and spring-driven, through to complex pantograph solutions.
One particularly formative project came about in collaboration with a logistics company that was one of the first to operate an electric heavy-goods vehicle with a battery capacity of 1,000 kWh. The implementation was initially successful. However, it was not after just a few charging cycles, but considerably later, that the customer reported a problem: the cable drum had stopped working.
On-site analysis revealed serious damage. Inside the slip ring body, severe melting damage had occurred due to the high thermal load. After an intensive and lengthy fault-finding process, it became clear: with charging cycles of this duration – up to 8 hours at a power output of 160 kW – conventional cable retraction systems with slip ring contacts reach their physical limits.
This realisation was the starting point for a new idea.
Fabian Streuli had long had a vision for a completely new cable management system – one that would work entirely without slip ring contacts. Together with his brother Tobias Streuli, who had already been with the company for several years and brought with him experience from special-purpose machine engineering, the development of a completely new approach began.
Fabian provided the impulse – Tobias put it into practice. Within a short space of time, an initial concept emerged: the foundation for what would later become the LineDrop System. The first version was operated manually. In an internal test setup, intensive trials were carried out to explore how charging cables and hoses of various weight categories could be guided in a controlled manner and stored at height.
The path to a solution was demanding. The forces involved in lowering and raising the cables were considerable. Various approaches were tested – including the use of additional spring balancers to reduce the load – but without achieving the desired result.
The decisive breakthrough came with the idea of a motor-driven system. Combined with a special drive rail and a rail guidance system, the final solution was born: the MIBAG LineDrop System.
A system that is not only technically convincing, but also represents a milestone in the 50-year history of MIBAG AG.
This was also made possible by the trust of Bruno Streuli, who gave his sons the freedom they needed to drive this innovation forward. Without that trust, this step would not have been possible.
Today, we are proud to have created a forward-looking solution for electromobility with the LineDrop System – developed from experience, passion, and the courage to forge new paths.
